Intestinal Obstruction (Ileus): Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by ileus (intestinal obstruction):

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Sepsis (blood poisoning) with symptoms of shock.

Mouth, esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and intestines (K00-K67; K90-K93).

  • Transmigratory peritonitis – peritonitis due to the escape of germs (intestinal bacteria) from the thin, mechanically damaged serosa (outermost tissue layer of the gastrointestinal tract).
  • Recurrence (recurrence) of ileus (intestinal obstruction).

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Multiple organ failure (MOV; synonyms: multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS); multiple organ failure, MOF) – simultaneous or sequential failure or severe functional impairment of multiple vital organ systems of the body.
  • Systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS).
