Intestinal Obstruction (Ileus): Therapy

To treat intestinal obstruction, the underlying disease must be treated.

General measures

  • If intestinal obstruction is suspected, it is necessary that you do not eat or drink anything from now on!
  • Review of permanent medication due topossible effect on the existing disease.

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

  • Placement of a gastric tube for decompression (abstinence from food or, at most, sips of tea).
  • Balanced volume therapy including supplementation of electrolytes.
  • If necessary, intestinal enemas (enema) to stimulate bowel activity.
  • Installation of a bladder catheter for fluid balancing.

Regular check-ups

  • Regular medical checkups

Nutritional medicine

  • Observance of the following special dietary recommendations:
    • Implementation of parenteral nutrition (nutrition via the vein).
    • Postoperative after ileus surgery: coffee drinking stimulates bowel activity faster than water after colonic extirpation (colon removal) and is well tolerated. In the water drinkers passed an average of 74 hours until the first bowel emptying, coffee drinking significantly shortened this period to 60 hours.
