Iron Deficiency Anemia: Diagnostic Tests

Optional medical device diagnostics – depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics, and obligatory medical device diagnostics – for differential diagnostic clarification.

  • Abdominal ultrasonography (ultrasound examination of abdominal organs) – for suspected hepatopathies (liver diseases), renal dysfunction or tumors.
  • Gastroscopy (gastroscopy) – on suspicion of chronic intestinal (“intestinal concerning”) blood loss due toulcers (ulcers), tumors or bleeding of other genesis (cause).
  • Colonoscopy (colonoscopy) – if chronic intestinal blood loss is suspected due toulcers, tumors or bleeding of other genesis.
  • Small bowel endoscopy using capsule endoscopy (procedure to visualize the mucosa of the digestive tract (esp. the small intestine) using a swallowable camera capsule) – when chronic intestinal blood loss is suspected and if gastroscopy or colonoscopy has not led to diagnostic findings after repetition.
  • Computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen (abdominal CT) – if tumors or bleeding of other etiologies are suspected.
