Irritable Bladder (Urethral Syndrome): Causes

Pathogenesis (development of disease)

Urethral syndrome (irritable bladder) probably involves disturbances in the autonomic nervous system. The associated symptoms are one of the possible manifestations of chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CPPS).

Detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia (DSD; bladder dysfunction characterized by impaired interaction of the anatomic structures involved in bladder emptying) is discussed.

Furthermore, inflammatory cell infiltrates are detected in high percentage in biopsies (tissue sampling) from the trigonal bladder mucosa (urinary bladder triangle).

Irritable bladder (synonym: overactive bladder dry (OAB dry; overactive bladder dry) may also be a consequence of urinary dysbiosis: one study demonstrated consistent and reproducible substantial differences in microbial load between OAB patients and controls.

Etiology (Causes)

No causative factors of irritable bladder are known.
