Irritable Stomach (Functional Dyspepsia): Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of functional dyspepsia (FD; irritable stomach syndrome).

Family history

  • Is there a history of frequent gastrointestinal disorders in your family?

Social history

  • Is there any evidence of psychosocial stress or strain due to your family situation?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms have you noticed?
    • Belching
    • Feeling of pressure in the stomach
    • Cramping abdominal pain
    • Nausea/vomiting
    • Feeling of fullness
  • How long have these symptoms been occurring?
  • When (in what situations) do the symptoms occur?
  • What can you do about the symptomatology?

Vegetative anamnesis including nutritional anamnesis.

  • Do you eat a balanced diet?
  • Do you eat regularly?
  • Do you eat quickly?

Self history including medication history.

  • Pre-existing conditions (gastrointestinal disorders; food intolerances; psychological disorders (eg, anxiety, depression, stress)).
