Is a stinky nose curable?

Introduction

The complete healing of a stinky nose is usually not achievable, since the genetic predisposition or most other causes cannot simply be “removed”. However, there are now a variety of therapeutic approaches that can at least considerably alleviate the symptoms of stinky nose. First and foremost is the consistent attempt to keep the nasal mucosa moist.

To achieve this, oily nasal drops (e.g. Coldastop) or salt-enriched nasal sprays are recommended. In addition, regular inhalation with salt water (e.g. Emser brine) can help to moisten the nasal mucosa. Nasal ointments (e.g. Bepanthen®) can also be used for this purpose.

It is also important for the mucous membrane to be sufficiently moisturized that those affected drink enough (i.e. at least 2 to 3 liters daily) and, if possible, stay in rooms with humidified indoor air. Vitamins A and vitamin E and zinc have a positive effect on mucous membranes in general, which is why these three should be taken in addition to normal food (the quantities contained in them are not sufficient), since this promotes the regeneration of the nasal mucous membrane and at the same time stops its progressive degeneration. If the incrustations are disturbing, they can be removed either mechanically or by means of a so-called nasal shower, which makes breathing easier again.

These measures should be carried out by a doctor, preferably an ear, nose and throat specialist. In extreme cases, sometimes only an operation can provide relief. These operations usually provide years of freedom from symptoms or at least significant relief from them.

  • During this procedure, small pieces of cartilage are implanted into the nasal cavity. This is intended to reduce the size of the nasal cavity, thus preventing the settlement of odor-forming germs and the formation of bark.
  • Another possibility is the artificial creation of a passage between the mouth and the nasal cavity, which is intended to allow saliva to enter the inside of the nose and thus moisten it.

In addition, triggering factors should of course be avoided as far as possible. Under no circumstances should decongestant nose drops continue to be used and any injury to the nose should be prevented.
