Is it possible to fly with a middle ear infection?

Whether or not you want to fly with an ear infection is up to you. However, it is by no means advisable. The pressure conditions in the aircraft are very stressful for the ear.

A damaged middle ear can hardly provide the necessary pressure equalization and this then leads to severe pain. Even if the middle ear inflammation has already healed, a doctor should examine the eardrum before starting the journey. Otherwise there is a risk of a new middle ear infection if the mucous membranes have not yet fully healed.

In addition, the dry, air-conditioned air in the aircraft is not good for the inflamed ear. Anyone who has ever flown with an inflammation of the middle ear will confirm this: The pain is extremely excruciating and difficult to bear, especially during landing. But not only flying should be avoided.

In general, one should refrain from activities in which one is exposed to differences in pressure. These include elevator rides over several floors and rides in amusement parks and at fun fairs.
