Is it possible to postpone ovulation?

Ovulation can be postponed with the help of hormonal contraceptives. Depending on the contraceptive used, ovulation can be suppressed. If the hormonal contraceptive is taken continuously – i.e. without a break – ovulation is postponed until the next break. Many women thus postpone their menstrual bleeding. The postponement of menstruation – and thus also of ovulation – should not take place regularly and should be discussed with a gynecologist.

Calculate ovulation

The exact time of ovulation can be calculated relatively easily. This can be particularly useful for women who want to have children, so that they know when their fertile days are. It is also helpful for women who want to prevent exactly that, to know when they need to be particularly careful and use contraception during sexual intercourse.

However, it is important to know that avoiding sexual intercourse on the fertile days is not a reliable contraceptive. To calculate the day of ovulation, you need the first day of your last menstruation and the length of your cycle. The length of the cycle is defined as the number of days between the first day of menstruation and the first day of the next menstruation.

With a regular cycle of days, ovulation takes place almost exactly in the middle of the menstrual cycle. The fertile days of the woman are about 5 days around the day of ovulation. Although the egg can only survive for about a day before it dies and is excreted, the sperm can survive for a few days in the fallopian tube and wait for the egg to be released. This should be taken into consideration especially if the calculation of the woman’s fertile days is used to prevent contraception in a natural way.

The duration of ovulation can range from a few minutes to several hours. The hormonal changes that ultimately lead to ovulation begin a few days before. However, the actual ovulation takes place within a very short time. The ovulated egg is then fertile for about 24 hours, so that fertilization must take place during this time. This can be done by having sexual intercourse either at the time of ovulation, or – even better – one or two days before.
