Is it possible to prevent with a solarium?

The solarium is a double-edged sword when it comes to preventing sunburn. The solarium uses a technology that mimics solar radiation in a softened form. This allows you to get a tan already in winter and to accustom your skin to a certain degree to the sun’s energy.

A visit to the solarium stimulates the body to produce the brown skin pigment melatonin. On the one hand, this leads to a tan of the skin, but at the same time also forms a certain protection against the sun. So if you already have a tan, you will have less to fear from sunburn than some others when the first stronger sunlight comes in spring. Often, however, the stay in a tanning salon is rather harmful for the skin, as it is exposed to a constant energy imitating the sun. The risk of skin cancer, for example, tends to increase with regular visits to a solarium.

Sun protection cream against sunburn

If intensive sunbathing cannot be avoided, it is important to use a sun protection cream with an adequate sun protection factor adapted to your skin type. The sun protection factor is the factor by which the skin’s own protection time is extended. For example, a self-protection time of 10 minutes can be extended fivefold by applying a sun protection cream with a sun protection factor of 5, so you can spend 50 instead of 10 minutes in the sun without having to expect sunburn.

The own skin type and thus the approximate self-protection time of the skin can be easily determined by means of the table. The sun protection cream should be applied generously half an hour before sunbathing, the particles and minerals it contains work the better, the more of them are present on the skin. Also, the application should be repeated after some time, because even waterproof cream gets off the skin through friction and sweating.

However, repeated application does not prolong the time you can stay in the sun, a high sun protection factor must be chosen for long sunbathing. When buying the sun cream you should also make sure that it contains a UVB and UVA filter to prevent premature skin aging. By the way, it is also possible to get a tan with sun cream with a high sun protection factor, as the sun cream is still UV-permeable enough to stimulate the formation of melanin in the skin, which ultimately ensures the tan.
