Is the radiation exposure dangerous? | X-ray of the thorax (chest X-ray)

Is the radiation exposure dangerous?

The radiation exposure from a chest X-ray is relatively low and comparable to the radiation exposure from a transatlantic flight. Therefore, the examination is usually not directly dangerous. Nevertheless, the possible benefits should always be weighed against the potential damage.

Superfluous and too frequent X-rays should be avoided, as otherwise the risk of cancer is increased. An X-ray thorax in pregnant women can be dangerous for the unborn child. Any exposure to radiation increases the risk of malformation or developmental disorders. As children are particularly susceptible to radiation damage, the indication for radiation should be particularly strict.

X-rays during pregnancy – is that possible?

During pregnancy any kind of radiation exposure should be avoided, as the unborn child is susceptible to radiation. Therefore, before any X-ray examination of the chest, for example, it must be ruled out that pregnancy is present. In rare and well-founded exceptional cases, however, an X-ray thorax can still be performed during pregnancy. In comparison to computed tomography, for example, the radiation emitted by X-rays is relatively low.

Costs of the examination

The costs of a chest X-ray examination are reimbursed according to the Uniform Assessment Scale for patients with statutory health insurance and according to the Medical Fee Schedule for private patients. In the case of a medically indicated X-ray thorax examination, the costs are covered in both cases. If the patient pays the costs himself, these may differ depending on the practice. They are approximately in the range of 30 to 50€.
