Is the U8 compulsory?

The U8 preventive medical checkup for children usually takes place between the 46th and 48th month of life, i.e. at the age of about 4 years. During this time, the child’s mobility and coordination skills are examined, and a sight and hearing test and a urine test are performed. The dental status can also be assessed within the scope of this examination. In most countries, the majority of preventive medical checkups for children and adolescents must be reported; they are therefore mandatory and are documented in the so-called Yellow Booklet.

Hearing test

The hearing test for the U8 screening is performed with the help of headphones put on the child. The test determines both the tube function and the hearing threshold by playing sounds of different frequencies and volumes to the child. The test is painless and requires only some cooperation on the part of the child. The child must indicate when he or she starts to hear each tone. If this is not possible, the test should be repeated at the next check-up (U9 examination) in order to rule out possible hearing loss and thus enable the child to develop speech and language.

Costs of the U8 examination

From birth to the completed 18th year of life a total of eleven preventive medical checkups for children are free of charge. Among them are the examinations U1 to U9, thus also the U8 examination in the 4th year of life, as long as they take place within the designated period. If this period is not adhered to, parents must pay for the examination as a so-called IgeL service.
