Javel Water

Products

Javel water is available in grocery stores and specialty stores. For medical use, Dakin solution is used.

Structure and properties

Javel water in the strict sense is an aqueous solution of potassium hypochlorite (KClO). In commerce, a sodium hypochlorite solution (NaClO) with the same properties is usually sold as Javel water. It is a colorless to greenish-yellow liquid with a chlorine odor.

  • Bleaching
  • Deodorizing (odor eliminating)
  • Disinfecting, antimicrobial
  • Algicidal (algae killing)
  • Piscicidal (fish-killing), very toxic to aquatic organisms.
  • Irritant

Fields of application

For surface disinfection, bleaching, cleaning and cleaning (eg, mold in the living room), whitening laundry, well cleaning.

Dosage

In suitable dilution according to the manufacturer’s instructions. It must be left to act for a few minutes, depending on the use, so that it can develop its effects. Then rinse well with water or wipe off.

Precautions

  • Javel water is irritating
  • Caution: do not mix with acid, this produces the toxic chlorine gas!
  • Wear rubber gloves
  • First test the material compatibility. Javelwasser is not compatible with all materials (see instructions for use).
  • Do not use for: Silk, wool, elastane, colored fabrics or leather. Javel water is suitable for bleaching cotton, but may reduce the life of repeated use.
  • Irritating to eyes and skin. Avoid contact with eyes and skin. In case of contact, rinse immediately with plenty of water. With the eyes: consult a doctor.
  • Keep out of the reach of children.
  • Do not inhale aerosol
