Jaw lock vs. lockjaw – What is the difference?

The term “lockjaw” and “lockjaw” are often confused, but they are fundamentally different:

  • Jaw-clamp is a symptomatology that describes that the mouth opening is restricted and disturbed. Mandibular lockjaws have many different possible causes, which makes it difficult to determine the location of the symptoms. It can be caused by a harmless bruise of the muscle after local anesthesia before dental treatment. However, more serious causes such as temporomandibular joint disorders, muscle cramps and salivary gland disorders can also be responsible.
  • The lockjaw, on the other hand, is a disease in which the closure of the jaw cannot be completed, not only a symptom. The causes of a lockjaw are usually the jaw joint or jaw fractures of the lower jaw bone.

Which doctor treats the lockjaw?

As a rule, the dentist treats a lockjaw. In severe cases, the oral and maxillofacial surgeon can also be consulted to resolve the symptoms.
