Jaw Pain
Jaw pains on the left side occur in many people. They are especially common with teeth grinding. If the teeth are unconsciously pressed and rubbed against each other during sleep at night, this puts a great deal of strain on the teeth, jaw bones and chewing muscles.
In the long run, this leads to hardening and cramping of the chewing musculature and in advanced stages to arthroses of the jaw joints. In the morning after waking up, those affected often feel headaches and a stiffness in the jaw when the mouth is opened. Special bite splints from the dentist can help to distribute the pressure better when grinding. However, jaw pain on the left side can also be caused by radiating pain in the ear or parotid gland. Last but not least, they sometimes occur as a side effect of a heart attack, but then there is usually additional chest pain and shortness of breath.
Pain when coughing
Pain on the left side of the body when coughing can occur as a result of an infection, for example. If there is a strong urge to cough for a longer period of time, the trunk muscles are put under heavy strain and develop a kind of muscle ache. This can be painful when coughing. Inflammatory processes or fractures in the trunk or abdominal area can also be painful when coughing, as the pressure in the abdominal cavity increases and the structures are compressed. For example, coughing can cause such pain in the case of umbilical or inguinal hernias, inflammation of the mucous membranes of the stomach, inflammation of the intestines or pathological processes in the ovaries.
Pain after alcohol consumption
Pain on the left side of the body after alcohol consumption is not a specific symptom of a particular disease caused by acute alcohol consumption. However, regular alcohol consumption can cause some clinical pictures that can trigger left-sided pain, such as pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) and gastritis (inflammation of the mucous membranes of the stomach). Pancreatitis typically involves belt-like pain that runs around the upper abdomen towards the back.
In the case of gastritis, the pain tends to concentrate on the middle to left upper abdomen. Acute left-sided pain after a single consumption of alcohol is not necessarily due to alcohol consumption. For this reason, a medical clarification should be carried out in the case of severe symptoms in order to rule out serious causes for the pain.
