Joint Pain

Regardless of the cause of the swelling in hands, feet or legs, it can always be associated with pain. The excess fluid creates pressure in the tissues which can cause pain and movement restrictions. However, if these remain, the cause of the swelling should be clarified by a doctor, as pain is often a symptom of inflammatory processes in the body.

Especially if other symptoms such as redness or a feeling of warmth are added, an inflammation is likely. This is typical, for example, in diseases such as osteoarthritis, which causes inflammation in the small and later also in the large joints. Other diseases that can lead to swelling and pain in the joint are gout, rheumatism, trauma, psoriasis, bursitis or bacterial infections. If the joint pain persists over a longer period of time or occurs for no apparent reason, the cause should be clarified by the doctor so that an appropriate therapy can be initiated as early as possible. Swelling in heat and in summer

Especially high heat in summer can cause hands, feet and legs to swell. This is normally a normal reaction of the body to the heat, whereby the blood vessels expand. This is promoted by prolonged standing, a low fluid intake and too little movement.

However, it is possible to keep the swelling of the limbs within limits by taking appropriate countermeasures. These include, for example:

  • Avoiding constricting or too tight clothing.
  • Sufficient exercise in the form of regular sports, long walks and the integration of simple exercises that activate the vein pump into everyday life.
  • Alternating showers to stimulate blood circulation, i.e. showering cold for about 20 seconds and then warm.
  • Make sure you drink enough fluids and eat plenty of fruit and vegetables. Avoid heavy food and rather eat several small meals spread over the day.
  • Take cold foot baths or place cool packs on the affected areas of the body. Cooling rubs can also provide relief.
