Products
Pure jojoba wax is available in pharmacies and drugstores, among other places.
Structure and properties
Jojoba wax exists as a golden yellow liquid extracted from the seeds of the jojoba shrub in the Simmondsiaceae family. The jojoba shrub is native to the Sonoran Desert in Mexico in southwestern North America. The melting point of the wax is 7°C, and the boiling point is about 400°C. It should be noted that it is not a fatty oil, but a liquid wax. It contains wax esters consisting of long-chain fatty acids and primary alcohols.
Effects
Jojoba wax has skin conditioning, emollient and moisturizing properties. It is stable to oxidation, heat and hydrolysis, does not go rancid and therefore has a long shelf life. Jojoba wax absorbs well and does not feel greasy on the skin.
Fields of application
Jojoba wax is similar to spermaceti oil and is used as a substitute for it.
- As a skin care product, for massages.
- For the manufacture of cosmetics and personal care products.
- For the dilution of essential oils for external use.
Contraindications
Ingestion is not recommended because the wax is not digested and can lead to fatty stools.
Adverse effects
Reports of allergic reactions exist in the literature.
