Katadolon®

Fields of application

Katadolon® belongs to the group of painkillers and is used to relieve acute and chronic pain of various origins. Examples of the areas of application are the following pains:

  • Painful tensions of the holding/movement musculature
  • Tension headaches
  • Menstrual pain/menstrual pain
  • Tumor Pain
  • Pain after operations/injuries

The most important contraindication for taking Katadolon® is an allergy or hypersensitivity to the active ingredient flupirtine maleate or another component of the drug Katadolon®. Other contraindications are liver dysfunction/hepatic diseases, bile stasis, alcohol abuse or, if a deterioration in brain function and movement disorders are observed when taking Katadolon®. Since the active ingredient flupirtine maleate relaxes the muscles, it should not be used in patients with muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis). Tinnitus patients treated with Katadolon® have an increased risk of developing elevated liver enzymes according to studies, which is why they should not be treated with Katadolon®.

Dosage

The doctor prescribes the individual dose of Katadolon®. In most cases, this is 3 to 4 capsules daily, which should be taken unchewed and at equal intervals with a glass of water. In case of severe pain or increased sensitivity, the dose of Katadolon® can still be individually adjusted by the doctor to the patient concerned, but a daily dose of 600 mg flupirtine maleate (=6 capsules) should not be exceeded. Especially in older patients over 65 years of age, the active ingredient of Katadolon® must be introduced slowly to avoid excessive dosage and to test the required dosage carefully first. If there is a reduced blood protein level or severely impaired kidney function, a daily dose of 300 mg flupirtine maleate (=3 capsules) must not be exceeded.

For longer treatment with Katadolon®

Since the drug Katadolon® is mainly degraded by the liver, it is essential to watch out for an increase in liver enzymes during prolonged use and to perform regular checks.
