Ketazolam is commercially available in capsule form (Solatran). It has been approved in many countries since 1980.
Structure and properties
Ketazolam (C20H17ClN2O3, Mr = 368.8 g/mol) structurally belongs to the 1,4-benzodiazepines.
Effects
Ketazolam (ATC N05BA10) has antianxiety, depressant, muscle relaxant, and anticonvulsant properties. The effects are due to binding to GABA-A receptors and enhancement of GABAergic inhibition. Ketazolam has a short half-life of about 2 hours but has active metabolites with a long half-life of up to 50 hours.
Indications
For the treatment of anxiety and tension states of various causes. For sleep disorders and supportive treatment of muscle spasms.
Dosage
According to the professional information. The capsules are usually taken in the evening before bedtime. The duration of therapy should be kept as short as possible.
Abuse
Like all benzodiazepines, ketazolam can be abused as a depressant intoxicant. Abuse is dangerous, especially in combination with other depressant and respiratory depressant drugs and with alcohol.

Interactions
Drug-drug interactions are possible with central depressant drugs, alcohol, some antiepileptic drugs, CYP inhibitors, and muscle relaxants.
Adverse effects
Possible adverse effects include psychiatric disturbances, drowsiness, dizziness, decreased responsiveness, visual disturbances, respiratory disturbances, and indigestion. Like all benzodiazepines, ketazolam can be addictive.
