Kidney pain during pregnancy

Kidney pain during pregnancy can be a harmless symptom that lasts only for a short time. However, they can also recur. A possible symptom of kidney pain in pregnancy may be a disturbance in the flow of urine.

This can be caused by the fact that the uterus, which is significantly enlarged as a result of pregnancy, presses on one or both ureters. This can lead to a more or less pronounced urinary retention. If it is only a mild variant, the expectant mother can be free of symptoms.

However, the risk of developing a urinary tract infection is increased due to the urinary stasis. If the congestion is more severe, pain may occur in the area of the flank, usually on one side, but sometimes also on both sides. If kidney pain recurs during pregnancy, a doctor should be consulted, who can determine whether urinary congestion is present and whether treatment is necessary by means of an ultrasound examination. In general, the following applies to expectant mothers with kidney pain: Drink a lot and heat applications help.

Kidney pain after cystitis

A bladder infection often manifests itself through a frequent urge to urinate and a burning sensation when passing water. Occasionally, kidney pain can also occur in the course of such a urinary tract infection. This can be harmless, but should also be seen as a warning signal.

Because an untreated cystitis can develop into a kidney pelvic inflammation. This happens because the bacteria “rise” from the draining urinary tract to the kidney and cause an inflammation there. This so-called pyelonephritis is then accompanied by kidney pain and often fever and chills and must be treated with antibiotics. Because of this danger, kidney pains that occur after a bladder infection or already during it should be taken seriously. An inflammation of the renal pelvis is usually an illness of only one of the two kidneys, the pain is thus usually localized on one side.
