Kinesio-tapen | Sciatic nerve pinched – What to do?

Kinesio-tapen

The foundation of Kinesio-Tape therapy is based on the understanding that muscle healing is accelerated by increasing blood flow and movement. In concrete terms, this is done by slightly lifting the skin and connective tissue with the Kinesio-Tape over the muscle. This creates a greater spatial opportunity for blood and other body fluids to flow in and around the muscle. This can also contribute to pain reduction and muscle relaxation. Thus, further steps on the way to healing can be achieved without much effort.

Duration of an incarcerated sciatic nerve

The duration of the pinching can be very variable. It can range from a short shooting pain to a chronic pain event that can last longer than three months. Painkillers can be taken for the chronic pain.

However, these should be taken in consultation with a doctor due to their side effects. This can also lead to sensory disturbances and paralysis of the leg and foot. In the case of acute entrapment, the paralysis symptoms should be eliminated as soon as possible.

How long the symptoms of the pinched sciatic nerve will last cannot be predicted exactly, as this also depends on the patient’s cooperation and the severity of the symptoms. A mild symptomatology can subside within a few days, whereas a severe symptomatology can sometimes last a week. The duration of the sick leave varies from person to person and depends on the condition of the individual.

The severe pain with the limitation of movement should not last longer than two days and even if pain can continue, it should subside and not increase. Approximately, 3-5 days off work are usually appropriate, but this can be extended in complicated cases. Also, in the workplace, care must be taken to maintain a supportive behavior and healthy posture in order not to aggravate or re-induce the problems.

If there is a clinically symptomatic incarceration of the sciatic nerve, the patient can also be put on sick leave. The length of time the patient is on sick leave depends on the severity of the symptoms. The patient should be careful not to give the doctor any information about the symptoms with regard to a possible sick note, but to make the symptoms as accurate and truthful as possible so that the doctor can suggest the best therapy for a speedy recovery.

Of course nobody should have to work under pain, so if the pain limits the ability to work, one should also ask for a sick note. For how long the affected persons will be on sick leave will be decided individually in each case. During pregnancy, the entire musculature is increasingly strained.

As a result, especially in the last third of the pregnancy, the spinal column and the gluteal muscles are put under heavy strain. If the gluteal and trunk muscles are exhausted, the sciatic nerve can become trapped. This particularly affects pregnant women who already had rather weaker muscles before the pregnancy.

Of course, it is not only the muscles alone that are decisive for a constriction of the sciatic nerve during pregnancy, but also the posture. During pregnancy, you should try to keep yourself straight, especially in the pelvis. If, despite all caution, the nerve becomes trapped or irritated, it is advisable to first seek classic relaxation methods.Hot water bottles can be used or a warm bath can be taken.

If there is an inflammation of the sciatic nerve, anti-inflammatory drugs (antiphlogistics) can also be used. However, taking these drugs is not completely harmless during pregnancy and should be discussed with the gynecologist in charge. The duration of taking the medication should also be kept as short as possible. Pregnant women should consult their gynaecologist as soon as they have back pain or pain in the area of the sciatic nerve, as permanent pain can lead to additional stress, especially during pregnancy.
