Klacid®

Klacid® belongs to the group of so-called macrolide antibiotics and inhibits the growth of bacteria.

Application areas of Klacid®

The use of Klacid® is indicated for all diseases caused by pathogens that are sensitive to Clarithromycin and can be reached by oral treatment. This includes:

  • Acute Bronchitis
  • Chronic Bronchitis
  • Pneumonia (pneumonia), and atypical pneumonia (mycoplasma pneumonia)
  • Tonsillitis (tonsillitis)
  • Pharyngitis (inflammation of the throat)
  • Sinusitis (inflammation of the paranasal sinuses)
  • Pus lichen (Impetigo contagiosa)
  • Erysipelas
  • Strong inflammation of the hair follicles, deep inflammation of the hair follicle
  • Wound infections

Contraindications

Klacid® must not be taken if there is an allergy to the active substance clarithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics (e.g. erythromycin). In addition, Klacid® should not be taken if any of the following medicines are taken at the same time

  • Antihistamines (e.g. terfenadine, astemizole)
  • Means for stimulating intestinal movement (e.g.

    cisapride)

  • Psychotropic drugs (e.g. pimozide)
  • Medicines for migraines or certain circulatory disorders (e.g. ergotamine or dihydroergotamine)
  • Medicines to lower cholesterol (e.g. statins)
  • In the presence of cardiac arrhythmia (e.g. QT interval extension)
  • Restricted kidney/liver function not with simultaneous intake of gout medication
  • In case of severely reduced liver function

Application/Dosage of Klacid®

Klacid® is taken according to the doctor’s instructions. The standard dosage corresponds to a 250mg intake twice a day (i.e. 2 film-coated tablets a day), at intervals of 12 hours (morning and evening). Depending on the present disease and the individual metabolic performance of the patient, an adjustment of the dosage may be necessary. Klacid® is taken unchewed with a glass of water, independent of meals.

Side effects

The most commonly reported side effects were in adults and adolescents: Occasionally may occur:

  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Nausea
  • Impairment of the sense of taste
  • Gastro-intestinal inflammations
  • Yeast fungus colonization
  • Vaginal infection
  • Strong reddening of the skin
  • Decrease in the concentration of white blood cells
  • Strong increase of blood platelets
  • Agranulocytosis (reduction of granulocytes)
  • Lack of blood platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Anaphylactoids/anaphylactic reactions (acute shock)
  • Reduced appetite up to complete loss of appetite, low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia)
  • Psychiatric disorders such as insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, crying, confusion, depersonalization, depression, disorientation, hallucinations, nightmares
  • Loss of consciousness, movement disorder, dizziness, drowsiness, trembling
  • Seizures
  • Odour disorders, sensitivity disorders
