Lacosamide

Products

Lacosamide is commercially available as film-coated tablets, syrup, and infusion solution (Vimpat). It has been approved in many countries since 2009.

Structure and properties

Lacosamide (C13H18N2O3, Mr = 250.3 g/mol) is present as a white to slightly yellow powder and is sparingly soluble in water. It is present in the drug as a pure -enantiomer.

Effects

Lacosamide (ATC N03AX18) has antiepileptic properties. It enhances the slow inactivation of voltage-gated sodium channels, thereby stabilizing the hyperexcitable membranes of neurons. Lacosamide is well absorbed and has a half-life of approximately 13 hours.

Indications

As adjunctive therapy of partial seizures with or without secondary generalization in patients with epilepsy.

Dosage

According to the SmPC. The drug is taken in the morning and evening independently of meals. Treatment is started gradually.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity
  • 2nd or 3rd degree AV block

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effects include dizziness, headache, nausea, and double vision.
