Laryngitis (Larynx Inflammation): Therapy

General measures

  • In acute laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx), absolute vocal rest is required for up to 7 days!
  • Inhalation of water vapor containing chamomile, sage or marshmallow.
  • Warm neck compresses and warm drinks can relieve discomfort
  • Observance of the general hygiene measures!
  • Nicotine restriction (refrain from tobacco use).
  • Alcohol restriction (abstaining from alcohol)
  • Limited caffeine consumption (max. 240 mg of caffeine per day; equivalent to 2 to 3 cups of coffee or 4 to 6 cups of green / black tea).
  • Aim for normal weight! Determination of BMI (body mass index, body mass index) or body composition using electrical impedance analysis.
    • BMI ≥ 25 → participation in a medically supervised weight loss program.
    • Falling below the BMI lower limit (from the age of 45: 22; from the age of 55: 23; from the age of 65: 24) → Participation in a medically supervised program for the underweight.
  • Avoidance of psychosocial stress:
  • Avoidance of environmental stress:
    • Exogenous noxae (toxins) – air pollutants, dry air, dust pollution, chemicals.

Conventional non-surgical therapy methods

  • In complicated cases of acute laryngitis, intubation may be required because of respiratory distress. This involves inserting a hollow tube into the trachea to restore breathing.

Nutritional medicine

  • Nutritional counseling based on nutritional analysis
  • Nutritional recommendations according to a mixed diet taking into account the disease at hand. This means, among other things:
    • Plant-based, Mediterranean diet combined with drinking alkaline water; may relieve the symptoms of laryngitis gastrica (nonbacterial, inflammatory reaction of the mucosa in the larynx and surrounding pharynx caused by a reflux (Latin refluxus “backflow”) of gastric secretions) at least as well as by treatment with a proton pump inhibitor (PPI; acid blocker).
    • A total of 5 servings of fresh vegetables and fruit daily (≥ 400 g; 3 servings of vegetables and 2 servings of fruit)
    • Once or twice a week fresh sea fish, i.e. fatty marine fish (omega-3 fatty acids) such as salmon, herring, mackerel.
    • High-fiber diet (whole grain products).
  • Selection of appropriate food based on the nutritional analysis
  • See also under “Therapy with micronutrients (vital substances)” – if necessary, taking a suitable dietary supplement.
  • Detailed information on nutritional medicine you will receive from us.

Psychotherapy

Physical therapy (including physiotherapy)

Complementary treatment methods

  • Speech therapy (identification and treatment of existing speech, language, voice, and swallowing disorders): When chronic laryngitis (inflammation of the larynx) is secondary (subsequent) to improper vocal technique, speech therapy may be indicated, but only after the cause of the inflammation has been identified and corrected.
