The diagnosis of latent (subclinical) hyperthyroidism (hyperthyroidism) is made primarily by clinical presentation and laboratory testing.
Optional medical device diagnostics-depending on the results of the history, physical examination, laboratory diagnostics, and obligatory medical device diagnostics-are used for differential diagnosis.
- Thyroid ultrasonography (ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland) – to visualize the size of the thyroid gland and detect any nodules that may be present.
- Thyroid scintigraphy – representation of the thyroid gland and its function with the help of radioactive substances for example in the presence of thyroid nodules.
- Fine needle biopsy (sonography-guided tissue sampling) – in case of abnormalities in sonography or thyroid scintigraphy.
