Lauric Acid

Products

Lauric acid is contained in various fats and fatty oils, which are also used for the production of medicines. In coconut oil, the percentage is up to 45%.

Structure and properties

Lauric acid (C12H24O2, Mr = 200.3 g/mol) is a saturated C12 fatty acid (dodecanoic acid). It exists as a white crystalline powder and is practically insoluble in water. The melting point is about 44°C. Its salts are called laurates, for example the sodium salt sodium laurate.

Effects

Preparations containing lauric acid have skin-conditioning properties. Lauric acid has antimicrobial activity against bacteria, fungi and viruses.
