LEA contraceptive

LEA contraceptivum is a mechanical contraceptive made of silicone that can be inserted by the woman herself. It is flexible, has a cup-shaped cavity, a valve and a control loop. It is inserted into the vagina like a tampon.

During the insertion, the presence of a valve creates a negative pressure. The LEA contraceptive therefore sucks itself into the cervix and is thus securely and firmly attached to it. In order to check whether it really fits well and securely, the control loop should be pulled slightly after insertion.

If you feel resistance when pulling, the LEA contraceptive is optimally positioned. The LEA contraceptive should not be attached to the cervix (lower portio) for more than 48 hours. It can be inserted directly before sexual intercourse, but also a few hours before.

It is important that it remains attached to the cervix for at least eight hours after intercourse to ensure that no sperm really reach the uterus. It can be removed by turning the control thread or by gently pulling on the silicone body itself. After use, the LEA contraceptivum should be cleaned with lukewarm water.

Depending on the frequency of use, it can be stored for up to one year. It is available without a prescription and can be purchased at the pharmacy or online. An adjustment by the gynaecologist is not necessary, as LEA contraceptivum is only available in one size.

Because a vacuum is created during insertion, it fits every woman. A disadvantage of the LEA contraceptive is that it is often felt during sexual intercourse and is seen as disturbing. The Pearl Index is about 2.9, but by coating the silicone with a spermicidal gel before insertion, the Pearl Index can be reduced to about 2.2.

The contraceptive Gynefix is a copper chain which is inserted into the uterus during menstruation by a specialist in gynaecology and feminine medicine. The copper chain is securely fixed in the uterus and therefore cannot slip out. The contraceptive effect is achieved by permanently releasing copper ions which kill sperm (spermicidal effect) and also prevent the build-up of the lining of the uterus (endometrium) and thus the implantation of the egg.

The contraceptive can be used by women of all ages. Gynefix has been on the European market for years and has been available for direct purchase in Germany since 2011. It is CE-certified and approved here in accordance with the Medical Devices Act.

The insertion of the copper chain is usually a private service. The costs vary and depend on various factors: the type of anesthesia, examinations before the insertion and ultrasound checks after the insertion. In general the costs are about 200-300 Euros.

In exceptional cases, your health insurance will also cover at least part of the costs. It is best to speak directly with your health insurance company. Disadvantages of Gynefix are possible infections. The Pearl index is 0.5, so the contraceptive is very safe.
