Learning Problems

Definition

Learning is the general term for processes that lead to behavioral change through experience. While some learning processes can be conditioned, imitation learning (learning by imitation) plays an essential role. Above all, however, learning is also a cognitive process that is carried out consciously and insightfully.

By learning problems we primarily understand those problems that occur within the framework of the cognitive process. The following problems frequently occur in school:

  • Partial performance deficits (dyslexia, dyscalculia)
  • Lack of concentration
  • ADSADHD

These problems can be complex and, above all, have a wide variety of causes. The secondary symptoms, which can lead to learning problems (low frustration tolerance, lack of self-confidence, depression and behavioural problems, etc.

), in turn cause difficulties that put a great deal of strain on the child’s psyche and the overall situation (family, school, etc.). The International Classification Concept of the World Health Organization (WHO), the ICD-10, attempts to subdivide developmental and learning disorders. It should be noted here that a subdivision like the one made there can be very useful for differentiation purposes, but one must always bear in mind that the causes of any problems that arise must never be seen in isolation.

This means that – after a differentiation has been made, for example according to ICD – 10 – one should always also take into account the accompanying factors that affect the child (family environment – kindergarten-school). The WHO concept was developed in the 1990s and distinguishes between two major developmental disorders.

  • Profound developmental disorders: Profound developmental disorders are understood to be, for example: The Kanner syndrome (early childhood autism), which usually makes itself felt before the age of 3 in the form of developmental delays (delayed speech development), contact disorders or stereotypes (= behaviour patterns that are repeated often and/or over a longer period of time) in the form of verbal expressions or actions.

#Asperger’s syndrome, which is a severe form of contact disorder that usually becomes noticeable at school age, especially in boys. This is a special form of autism. The Rett – Syndrome.

This is a hereditary disease that becomes noticeable between the 6th month of life and the 4th year of life by a decrease in the growth of the skull. As a result of the decrease, already learned abilities are forgotten and serious behavioral changes occur. In contrast to the Asperger – syndrome so far almost exclusively girls with this syndrome were seized.
