Leishmaniasis: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by visceral leishmaniasis:

Blood, blood-forming organs – Immune system (D50-D90).

  • Anemia (anemia)
  • Pancytopenia (synonym: tricytopenia) – reduction of all three cell series in the blood.

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

  • Bacterial infections (secondary infection; bacterial superinfections).
  • Diarrhea (diarrhea)

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not elsewhere classified (R00-R99).

  • Hepatosplenomegaly (enlargement of the liver and spleen).
  • Lymphadenopathy (lymph node enlargement).

Further

  • Hemorrhagic diathesis (increased risk of bleeding), due tothrombocytopenia (decrease in platelet count/platelets).

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be co-occurring with mucocutaneous leishmaniasis:

  • Pneumonia (pneumonia)

  • Mutilation of the face or neck – as a result of the destruction of the mucous membranes.
