Leprosy: Medical History

The medical history (history of the patient) represents an important component in the diagnosis of leprosy.

Family history

  • What is the general health status of your relatives?

Social history

  • Have you ever had prolonged intensive contact with persons suffering from leprosy?
  • Have you ever been to countries (Southeast Asia/India, Africa, South America/Brazil) where leprosy is present?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms have you noticed?
  • How long have these changes been present?
  • Have the symptoms changed on the skin?
  • Have you noticed any change in the face?
  • Do you have pain in the extremities? Or sensitivity problems (decreased pain sensitivity/painlessness)? Paralysis?
  • Have you noticed hair loss?
  • Have you noticed any change in your vision?
