Leukotriene Antagonists

Products

Leukotriene antagonists are commercially available as film-coated tablets, granules, and chewable tablets.

Structure and properties

The active ingredients do not have a uniform chemical structure.

Effects

The leukotriene antagonists (ATC R03DC) have antiasthmatic, anti-inflammatory, bronchodilator, and antiallergic properties. They bind to the CysLT1 receptor, thereby inhibiting the effects of the cysteinyl leukotrienes LTC4, LTD4, and LTE4. These are potent inflammatory mediators that cause bronchoconstriction, increased vascular permeability, mucus secretion, and inflammatory cell accumulation, among other effects. The drugs, unlike other asthma medications, can be administered perorally and do not need to be inhaled. They are commonly used in pediatrics.

Indications

  • Bronchial asthma
  • Allergic rhinitis (seasonal and perennial)
