Life expectancy | Pancreatic insufficiency

Life expectancy

People with chronic pancreatitis have a reduced life expectancy due to their disease. This is usually due to the fact that pancreatic insufficiency is associated with other serious diseases or because the disease is also the result of other serious underlying diseases. An accumulation of the disease is also found in excessive alcohol consumption, whereby alcohol alone, after years of drinking, can lead to a reduction in life expectancy due to its possible consequences.

The 10-year survival rate for pancreatic insufficiency is 50%. This means that half of the people who suffer from pancreatic insufficiency today will die of their disease within the next 10 years. Treatment of the disease by the above mentioned measures such as medication, adaptation of lifestyle with a healthy diet, abstinence from nicotine and alcohol can help to improve the prognosis of pancreatic insufficiency. However, a cure can no longer be achieved by these measures.
