Lipedema: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by lipedema:

Endocrine, nutritional, and metabolic diseases (E00-E90).

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

  • Secondary lymphedema – accumulation of protein-rich fluid.

Infectious and parasitic diseases (A00-B99).

Musculoskeletal system and connective tissue (M00-M99).

  • Osteoarthritis, without further specification
  • Valgus deformity (deformity in which the part farther from the body points away from the midline beyond normal) in the knee joints* .
  • Buckling foot position in the upper ankle joint* .
  • Apparent varization (“outward curvature”) in the hip joint* .

* due tofat pad on the proximal inner thigh, which leads to an evasive movement of the legs in the sense of an inverted V- position.

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings not classified elsewhere (R00-R99)

  • Chronic pain
