Lipedema: Surgical Therapy

1st order

  • Liposuction (liposuction) under tumescent local anesthesia (TLA* ) – several sessions may be necessary; after surgery, physical therapy (see under “Further therapy”) should be continued and a special compression bandage should be worn. The procedure leads to a permanent reduction of the pathologically increased fatty tissue as well as to a reduction of tissue pressure, so that less water can be deposited in the affected tissue: Leg circumference and pain can thus be reduced.

* Procedure whose principle of action is based on the use of a large-volume administration of a solvent, which is mixed with the local anesthetic (agent for local anesthesia) and injected into the subcutaneous fat tissue.

Note on the legal basis for the recognition of liposuction as a therapeutic measure by the statutory health insurance (SHI): since January 2020, the service has been covered by the SHI for stage 3 b lipedema. In addition, proof of successful conservative therapy over 6 months must be provided. The same applies to patients with obesity grade II (BMI: 35-39.9).
