Liver: What Harms the Liver?

VM: Men generally tolerate more alcohol than women due to their larger liver and greater muscle mass compared to fat mass. It also matters whether alcohol consumption is infrequent or daily.

As a rule of thumb can apply: Half a liter of beer or a quarter of a liter of wine a day does not cause liver damage. But daily a whole liter of beer or a half liter of wine makes over time already clearly measurable liver damage.

High-proof alcohol quickly leads to liver damage

If you drink 2 to 3 liters of beer once on the weekend, but then no alcohol for 6 days, you hardly need to fear liver damage. It is different if in addition liquor is drunk. For women, somewhat less applies, depending on body weight. A 50 kg woman can tolerate only half as much as an 80 kg man.

Fat food: At what point does it become critical for the liver?

VM: When the bile department of the liver is disturbed, it manifests itself in a feeling of pressure in the right upper abdomen, light-colored stools, intestinal tumors, flatulence, diarrhea or constipation. In case of obstruction of the bile duct due to stones, inflammation or cramping, which may also be psychological, the stool may even turn completely grayish-white.

These patients should definitely avoid oils, especially if they are heated above 60 degrees. They should eat butter, cook and fry with butter or clarified butter, and use only cold-pressed safflower oil or olive oil in salads. Walnut oil makes bile colic the fastest, so these patients should never eat more than 5 walnuts a day at Christmas.
