Low Blood Pressure (Hypotension): Complications

The following are the major diseases or complications that may be contributed to by hypotension (low blood pressure):

Cardiovascular system (I00-I99)

  • Apoplexy (stroke; 64% higher (RR 1.64; 95% CI 1.13-2.37) with orthostatic hypotension).
  • Heart failure-associated events (by 125% higher (RR 2.25; 95% CI 1.52-3.33) in orthostatic hypotension)
  • Coronary artery disease (CAD) (by 41% higher (RR 1.41; 95% CI 1.22-1.63) in orthostatic hypotension)

Symptoms and abnormal clinical and laboratory findings, not elsewhere classified (R00-R99)

  • Suicidality due to hypotension; systolic blood pressure:
    • <100 mmHG (12.5% had suicidal ideation; versus 10.8% with normal blood pressure).
    • <95 mmHG (13.7% had suicidal ideation; vs. 10.8% with normal blood pressure)
    • <90 mmHG (16.6% had suicidal ideation; vs. 10.8% with normal blood pressure)
  • Syncope (brief loss of consciousness).
  • Vertigo (dizziness)

Further

  • Mortality risk (risk of death) ↑ (50% higher (RR 1.50; 95% CI 1.24-1.81) with orthostatic hypotension; although significance applied only to patients younger than 65 years)
  • Trauma (injury) from falls
