Macrogol 400

Products

Macrogol 400 is available in pharmacies and drugstores. It should not be confused with macrogol 4000, which is also used as a stool-regulating laxative, among other products.

Structure and properties

Macrogols are mixtures of linear polymers with the general formula H-(OCH2-CH2)n-OH, indicating the average number of oxyethylene groups. The macrogol type is defined by a number representing the average molecular weight. Macrogol 400 exists as a clear, viscous, colorless and hygroscopic liquid that is miscible with water due to its hydrophilicity. Macrogol 400 has a slightly higher density than water and solidifies at 4 to 8°C. It can be prepared with the epoxide ethylene oxide.

Effects

Macrogol 400 is used as a solubilizer, to adjust viscosity and as an emulsion stabilizer. According to the safety data sheet, macrogol 400 is readily ecologically degradable.

Areas of application

  • As a pharmaceutical excipient, for example, in gels, ointments (eg, macrogol ointment PH, povidone–iodine ointment), liquid dosage forms and suppositories (base mass, mixed with solid macrogols).
  • For the preparation of cosmetics.
