Magaldrat

Products

Magaldrate is commercially available in tablet form and as an oral gel (Riopan, Riopan forte). It has been approved in many countries since 1985.

Structure and properties

Magaldrate is composed of aluminum and magnesium hydroxides and sulfates. The composition is approximately equivalent to the formula Al5Mg10(OH)31(SO4)2 – x H2O. Magaldrate exists as a white crystalline powder that is practically insoluble in water but dissolves in dilute mineral acids.

Effects

Magaldrate (ATC A02AD02) neutralizes gastric acid. At the same time, it binds components of gastric juice such as pepsin, bile components, and lysolecithin. Magaldrate forms a protective film on the mucosa.

Indications

For the treatment of stomach burning, acid regurgitation, and feelings of pressure and fullness in the stomach area.

Dosage

According to the package leaflet. The medicine is taken after meals or when discomfort occurs.

Contraindications

  • Hypersensitivity
  • Hypophosphatemia
  • Fructose sorbitol intolerance (tablets)

Full precautions can be found in the drug label.

Interactions

Antacids such as Magaldrate may interfere with the absorption of other agents. These include, for example, antibiotics. Adequate time interval of at least two hours is recommended. Magaldrate should not be taken with acids because this may increase the absorption of aluminum. Another interaction has been described with vitamin K antagonists.

Adverse effects

The most common possible adverse effect is mushy stools.
