Magnesium tablets

Magnesium may be prescribed to prevent or treat a magnesium deficiency. It should help to regulate muscle activity, provide the body with increased energy and rebuild cell walls. Magnesium preparations from Biolectra are a good choice.

Magnesium tablets Risks

Magnesium as a medication should not be taken in persons suffering from severe kidney dysfunction and cardiac conduction disorders (e.g. : AV block). Also in case of already occurred hypersensitivity to a magnesium medication, no tablets should be taken. Even in the case of mild and moderate kidney dysfunction, as well as when taking gastric acid-binding or laxatives and in the case of mildly occurring kidney stones, magnesium should only be taken under the strict supervision of a doctor.

Pregnant women can take magnesium. If it is administered shortly before birth, the newborn baby should be monitored for at least 24, preferably 48 hours. Children can also be given magnesium. Depending on the preparation, there is a maximum dose for children.

Magnesium tablets side effects

Every person reacts differently to medicines. The following side effects may or may not occur. Depending on the type and frequency of taking a medicine, undesirable effects may vary.

If magnesium is taken orally as a tablet, effervescent tablet or capsule, soft stools may occur frequently. If diarrhoea occurs, treatment with magnesium should be temporarily interrupted. With a minimized daily dose, the medication can be continued as long as the bowel movement has normalized. If kidney function is impaired, long-term use may lead to increased tiredness during the day. The medication should be temporarily discontinued and a reduced dose taken after a break.

Magnesium and diarrhea

If magnesium tablets are taken in the context of a magnesium deficiency, diarrhoea may occur as a known side effect. Diarrhoea, also known medically as diarrhea, may also be a sign of an overdose of magnesium salts in the context of magnesium intake. However, there are also people who react so sensitively that even at the normal recommended daily dose they tend to have soft stools or even diarrhea. So if the intake of magnesium preparations leads to an increased occurrence of thin stools or diarrhoea, there are various possibilities to reduce them or to avoid them completely.

First, one can try to reduce the daily dose. It is possible that even a lower daily dose of magnesium can reduce the number of diarrhoea or even make it disappear completely. Another possibility is to stop taking the magnesium supplements in the evening instead of reducing the amount of magnesium.

Above all, taking magnesium before bedtime is recommended. If diarrhoea occurs while taking magnesium, another option is not to take the entire daily amount at once, but to spread it over several smaller portions throughout the day. In this way, the body may be able to absorb the magnesium completely from the intestines.

The occurrence of diarrhoea when taking magnesium supplements can be easily explained: Magnesium is taken by mouth. It then passes through the stomach into the intestinal tract where it is absorbed by the intestinal mucosa. There are small channels in the mucous membrane through which the magnesium reaches the bloodstream.

However, these channels have a limited absorption capacity. If this capacity is exceeded, not all of the magnesium can be absorbed by the mucous membrane, so that some of it remains in the intestinal lumen and is excreted with the stool. The problem with this, however, is that high magnesium concentrations inside the intestine lead to increased water being drawn into the intestine.

This mechanism causes the body to excrete more water into the intestine, making the stool softer or even more fluid and leading to diarrhea. Therefore, one should always drink a lot when taking magnesium, as water is withdrawn from the body. This is a useful side effect in older people.

They often suffer from constipation (medically called constipation) or take medication that leads to constipation. The tolerance of the various magnesium supplements can vary greatly from person to person. Therefore it can happen that one person gets diarrhoea from one preparation but not from the other. Therefore, changing the preparation can also help here as soon as diarrhoea occurs.
