Malaria: Medical History

Medical history (history of illness) represents an important component in the diagnosis of malaria.

Family history

Social history

  • Have you been on a foreign trip to a malaria area within the last year?
  • Did you protect yourself adequately there?
  • Do you work at the airport?

Current medical history/systemic history (somatic and psychological complaints).

  • What symptoms have you noticed?
  • How long have these symptoms been present?
  • Do you have a fever? If so, for how long? Is it continuous? How high is the fever?
  • Do you feel sluggish?
  • Do you suffer from headaches and / or aching limbs?
  • Do you suffer from diarrhea?
  • Do you have shortness of breath?*
  • Have you noticed a yellowing of the skin or eyes?* .
  • Have you noticed a noticeable reduction in urine output?* .
  • Can you recall a mosquito bite?

Self anamnesis incl. medication anamnesis

  • Pre-existing conditions (infections)
  • Operations
  • Allergies
  • Medication history (blood infusions?)
