Mammary Gland Inflammation (Mastitis): Surgical Therapy

1st order

  • Incision (cutting) and counterincision with insertion of a flap – performed when an abscess has formed.
  • Also mammary sonography-guided abscess puncture if necessary; contraindications: Suspected inflammatory breast carcinoma/breast cancer; strongly accepted abscesses (relative contraindications).

Advantages of breast ultrasonography (breast ultrasound) guided abscess puncture:

  • Can be performed on an outpatient basis, so breastfeeding can continue in the home environment.
  • Low invasiveness (no general anesthesia required; intravenous antibiotic treatment is also dispensable).
  • Low painfulness (low need for analgesics/painkillers).
  • Low rates of treatment failure and recurrence (<5%).
  • Breastfeeding remains unaffected even in subsequent pregnancies.
