Marsupialization in renal systems | Treatment of a renal cyst

Marsupialization in renal systems

A renal cyst marsupialization is performed laparoscopically, i.e. minimally invasive. However, it is rarely used nowadays. The aim is to expose the cyst. This is achieved by opening the cyst and suturing the edges to the surrounding tissue.

Medicines for kidney cysts

Renal cysts usually do not require drug therapy. In the case of kidney disease, it is generally important to drink a sufficient amount of water as long as the patient is not on dialysis. If the cyst causes pain, painkillers can be prescribed. However, in the case of a single cyst that repeatedly causes pain, surgical removal of the cyst should be considered – depending on the patient’s general condition.

Windowing for kidney cysts

The windowing of a renal cyst initially means that the kidney is punctured. This involves piercing several holes in the wall of the cyst to ensure adequate drainage of the fluid contained in the cyst.

Treatment of cystic kidneys

The situation is different with the so-called cystic kidneys. In this disease, a large number of cysts are located in the kidneys, which can sometimes severely restrict their function and sometimes cause pain. The loss of function can lead to high blood pressure, which must be adjusted with medication.

If an infection is present, it must be treated with appropriate antibiotics. In most cases, medication is also given to relieve the pain; if this is not sufficient, surgery can be performed to remove the cysts. In the worst case, dialysis or a kidney transplant may become necessary.
