Mastopathy: Complications

The following are the most important diseases or complications that may be contributed to by mastopathy:

Neoplasms – Tumor diseases (C00-D48).

  • Breast carcinoma – in grade III mastopathy (according to Prechtel), the risk of developing breast carcinoma (breast cancer) is as high as four percent

Prognostic factors

  • The cumulative incidence of breast carcinoma increases significantly after the second biopsy (tissue sample) if the finding had progressed from the category of “nonproliferative” (NP) to “proliferative disease without atypia” (PDWA) or “atypical hyperplasia” (AH). In the study, 41% of women with initial NP findings progressed to PDWA or AH. This resulted in a 77% increased risk of breast cancer compared with no change in NP findings.
