May I drink alcohol? | Nutrition in Crohn’s disease

May I drink alcohol?

Basically, it is possible to drink alcohol as long as you feel comfortable and you do not feel any strong irritation of the intestine afterwards. However, it is not advisable. Alcohol leads to a strong irritation of the mucous membrane.

The already irritated intestinal mucosa is therefore still provoked, especially in an acute episode. As a result, most of those affected do not feel like drinking alcohol, as they feel even worse with it than without alcohol. When the body is in a recovery phase, it is more likely to drink alcohol.

But even here it is better not to drink too much. Above all, you should avoid high-proof alcohol and limit consumption to special occasions. It is ultimately up to each individual to decide how to deal with the disease and to what extent he or she can do without certain things.

Can I eat bread?

The consumption of bread is basically possible. However, it is recommended not to consume wholemeal bread. Wheat bread or brown bread are therefore preferable. Patients also often report that they tolerate rusk, crispbread and toast. It is best to try out what is good for you.

Do I have to follow a gluten-free diet?

In Crohn’s disease it is not necessary to follow a gluten-free diet. On the contrary: often some gluten-containing foods, such as wheat bread, are better than some gluten-free products. This has to do with the fact that they are, for example, richer in fiber, which is ultimately bad in the case of an acute attack.

Diet for diarrhea

Since many vitamins, minerals and nutrients are lost during the inflammatory phase of Crohn’s disease due to extreme diarrhea, it is important to substitute them. This can be done through diet, but sometimes also through tablets or injections. In most cases, however, a diet is sufficient.

As mentioned above, it is important to drink plenty of fluids. Above all, a diet rich in protein and calcium should be aimed for, as well as a diet low in fiber. White bread and brown bread is just as good as steamed vegetables.
