Medication during pregnancy

If pregnant women suffer from coughing, they ask themselves the question, which medicines they can take without harming their unborn child. With light coughing pregnant women have the possibility first of all to fall back on household remedies or herbal remedies. Medicines based on thyme or marshmallow are usually well tolerated and harmless for the child, since they are of plant origin.

Tea with honey or infusions of onions can also be consumed without hesitation. Straight calming herbal teas not only help against coughing, but also relax altogether. Regular moistening of the respiratory tract, e.g. by inhalation of chamomile steam, helps against phlegm.

If the cough becomes worse, the pregnant woman can take cough-relieving medication, such as ACC akut® with acetylcysteine, after consulting a doctor and for a short period of time. Nursing medication for coughs should be taken, if at all, only after consulting a doctor and for a short period. The active ingredient dextromethorphan is recommended for this purpose. This substance is contained in cough suppressant Ratiopharm®, for example.

Medication for children

When children cough, there are several things you have to pay special attention to.

  • On the one hand, the child may cough because it has swallowed a foreign body. This often happens with small children.

This cough is unproductive and is often accompanied by shortness of breath. Such a situation is an emergency. In this case, the emergency services must be alerted or a doctor consulted as soon as possible.

  • Another cause of childhood cough is the so-called pseudo croup.

Pseudocroup is a disease of the respiratory tract in children, it is caused by an inflammation in the area of the larynx. Children suffering from croup have a dry cough, which sounds barking, and difficulty in breathing. Even in this situation, it is better to consult a doctor, because he can treat the child professionally.

  • However, if children only have a cold and cough because of it, the therapy is similar to that for adults.

Depending on the type of cough, i.e. dry or phlegmy, either cough suppressants or cough removers are given. The medications for cough that can be given to children are plant-based and well tolerated. Bronchicum® on thyme basis or Prospan® with ivy are suitable well, the gift should be discussed nevertheless with a physician, since also the duration of the treatment as well as the dosage can be estimated by the physician best. In addition to the treatment with medication, you can take away your child’s complaints with home remedies. Teas and still water provide moist mucous membranes, older children (from about 4 years) can suck sweets with the medicinal plant Icelandic moss.
