Medicines for irritable stomach

If irritable bowel syndrome also causes symptoms in the form of an irritable stomach (e.g. heartburn, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting), medication should also be used to treat these symptoms. If heartburn is the main symptom, drugs can be given to counteract acidity of the stomach: this can be achieved either by binding the stomach acids (so-called acid binders or antacids such as magnesium, calcium and aluminum salts) or by inhibiting acid production in the stomach (so-called proton pump inhibitors such as pantoprazole, omeprazole). If, on the other hand, nausea, vomiting or a feeling of fullness are the main symptoms of the irritable stomach, drugs that accelerate gastrointestinal emptying can be useful, similar to the therapy of constipation. These include metoclopramide (MCP) and herbal remedies such as aniseed, fennel, caraway, chamomile, lemon balm, liquorice, wormwood, etc.
