Medium-chain triglycerides are found as excipients in liquid, semisolid, and solid drug products.

Structure and properties

Medium-chain triglycerides are a mixture of triglycerides of saturated fatty acids, which mainly include caprylic acid (C8) and capric acid (C10). They are obtained from coconut or palm oil. It is a colorless to slightly yellowish oily liquid that is practically insoluble in water. The density is 0.95.

Effects

Medium-chain triglycerides have skin-conditioning, lipid-dissolving, and lubricating properties.
