Meloxicam

Meloxicam was commercially available in tablet form (Mobicox). It was approved in many countries since 1995. It was discontinued from distribution in 2016.

Structure and properties

Meloxicam (C14H13N3O4S2, Mr = 351.4 g/mol) belongs to the oxicams and is a thiazole and a benzothiazine derivative. It exists as a yellow powder that is practically insoluble in water.

Effects

Meloxicam (ATC M01AC06) has analgesic, antipyretic, and anti-inflammatory properties. The effects are due to inhibition of the synthesis of prostaglandins via cyclooxygenase. Meloxicam is more selective for COX-2 than for COX-1 and has a long half-life of 13 to 25 hours.

Indications

For the treatment of pain and inflammatory conditions of various causes:

  • Chronic polyarthritis
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Sciatica syndrome
  • Ankylosing spondylitis

Dosage

According to the professional information. The tablets are usually taken once a day during a meal.

Contraindications

Adverse effects

The most common potential adverse effects include digestive symptoms such as dyspepsia, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain and diarrhea, and headache. As with other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, serious side effects such as gastric and intestinal ulcers, cardiovascular disease, severe skin reactions, and kidney disease are possible.
