Meningiomas: Symptoms, Complaints, Signs

The clinical picture depends on the location of the meningioma as well as the extent of tumor-induced increase in intracranial pressure (intracranial pressure).

The following symptoms and complaints may indicate meningioma:

Main symptoms

  • Dysosmia (olfactory disturbances).
  • Epileptic seizures (convulsive seizures)
  • Exophthalmos (pathological protrusion of the eyeball from the orbit).
  • Brain pressure signs – headache, nausea (nausea), vomiting (vomiting), inappetence (loss of appetite), fatigue, restlessness, vigilance disorder (decreased attention).
  • Hyperostosis (formation of excess bone tissue) if the meningioma is located in the bony skull (rare) – externally visible as a bump
  • Neurological deficits – gait unsteadiness, visual disturbances (visual acuity reduction (reduction), visual field deficits), speech disorders.
  • Behavioral abnormalities, changes in character – aggressiveness.

If the meningioma is located in the spinal canal (spinal cord canal), the following symptoms may occur:

  • Restrictions on the mobility of the extremities
  • Paresthesias (sensory disturbances)
  • Paresis (paralysis)
