Mesangial IgA Glomerulonephritis: Complications

The following are the major diseases or complications that may be co-morbid with mesangial IgA glomerulonephritis:

Genitourinary system (kidneys, urinary tract-genital organs) (N00-N99).

  • Acute renal failure (5% of cases).
  • Nephrotic syndrome – collective term for symptoms that occur in various diseases of the glomerulus (renal corpuscles); the symptoms are proteinuria (increased excretion of protein in the urine) with a loss of protein; hypoproteinemia, peripheral edema (water retention) due to hypoalbuminemia (decreased level of albumin in the blood), hyperlipoproteinemia (lipid metabolism disorder) (5% of cases).
  • Renal insufficiency (kidney weakness).
  • Terminal renal failure within 10 years (10-20% of patients) with dialysis requirement or need for kidney transplantation
