Mesulfen

Products

Mesulfen was formerly included in Soufrol Sulfur Oil Bath, which also contained kerosene and excipients. It was approved in many countries in 1967. Since 2016, Soufrol no longer contains mesulfen, but colloidal sulfur.

Structure and properties

Mesulfen (C14H12S2, Mr = 244.38 g/mol) is an organic sulfur compound.

Effects

Mesulfen (ATC D10AB05, ATC P03AA03) has antipruritic, anti-inflammatory, and antiparasitic properties.

Indications

For the treatment of rheumatic diseases of muscles and joints, acne, eczema (especially desiccation eczema).

Contraindications

The bath is contraindicated in infants, young children and in case of hypersensitivity. Full precautions can be found in the drug label.

Adverse effects

Possible adverse effects include local intolerance reactions.
